Open For Business

Come on in….we’re open for business.

Welcome to the Internet home of Advocatus, a new consulting firm founded by me - Jay W. Ragley. The firm’s first three practice areas will be government relations, education, and communications. So why launch a firm?

Some readers may be familiar with the concept of ikigai, a concept popularized in Japanese culture. There are direct translations and inferred translations, but in my research on the topic I found the simplest explanation is “why I get up in the morning.”

The graphic below illustrates ikigai that makes sense to me:

My professional ikigai breaks down as follows at this point in my life:

  • Passion: Making positive change.

  • Mission: Helping others achieve their goals.

  • Profession: Advising and counseling others.

  • Vocation: Build strategies and tactics with others to create opportunities and resolve challenges.

The best path forward I know to fulfill my professional ikigai is to launch my firm. That’s it. Nothing super insightful. No mid-life crisis. Ready to carve a new path for myself.

Part of that new path is sharing knowledge with readers through this blog. Some will be simply prose but I will post “how to” videos occasionally on subjects where I have some expertise. Our firm will eventually have a newsletter as well, giving clients and readers more content to chew at the dinner table, the State House, or the office water cooler.
