Southeast State Legislature Preview January 30-February 3, 2023
Southeast state legislature meetings, grouped by state, for the week of January 30-February 3, 2023. There are no meetings scheduled in Alabama and Florida. The week of February 6 will be Florida’s next interim session week. Budget work continues to dominate in most legislatures but the policy committees are beginning to debate and dispose of bills to populate floor calendars in the coming weeks.

Georgia
Georgia is holding several floor sessions next week; four in the Senate and one in the House. Appropriations work continues but expect policy committees to begin ramping up soon.

Mississippi
The Senate has a full day of committee hearings on January 31 with nearly every committee meeting. The House has four committee hearings scheduled for January 30.
North Carolina
North Carolina bill introductions continue with nearly thirty bills filed in each chamber; filing will continue into February.
The Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a confirmation hearing for Todd Ishee, nominee for Secretary of Adult Correction. The 2021 state budget split adult corrections as a stand-alone state agency, keeping the Division of Juvenile Justice within the Department of Public Safety.
The House Education K-12 Committee will consider HB 11, a comprehensive bill concerning the governance and operations of three schools for the deaf and the blind: Governor Morehead School for the Blind, the North Carolina School for the Deaf, and the Eastern North Carolina School for the Deaf.

South Carolina
House Ways and Means subcommittees are wrapping up their work on the FY24 appropriations bill by holding ten (10) subcommittee meetings. Some large agencies and entities present their budget requests next week: Department of Administration, Department of Commerce, Department of Revenue, Public Service Authority (Santee Cooper), Department of Education, the three statewide public charter school authorizers, the Medical University of South Carolina Hospital Authority, and the Judicial Department. Five (5) Senate Finance subcommittees kickoff their budget hearings next week too.

Tennessee
Committees and subcommittees in Tennessee are busy next week with nearly every committee holding hearings Too many to list here but the schedule below is constantly updated as new meeting notices and agendas are published.

Virginia
Another packed week of committee and subcommittee meetings in Virginia: eighty-nine (89), which is an increase from the previous week of seventy-four (74). There are dozens of House and Senate Appropriations subcommittee meetings, the House Courts of Justice Committee has several hearings next week (similar to a Judiciary Committee in other chambers), and policy committees with jurisdiction over education, agriculture, and transportation all have scheduled hearings.
